2/30 | L,H | Brainard tells us about the story that he was told by an elderly African American known as "Aunt Betsy" throughout the community. She recounts an event during the Civil War that took place on Dymers Creek which is located just outside of Kilmarnock. At the time Aunt Betsy was 12 years old. The story is about the Harriett DeFord - a Union operated vessel that right at the end of the war was captured by a group of Confederates under the leadership of Captain Thaddeus Fitzhugh. The Deford was brought to Dymers Creek where the goods from her were unloaded and taken to Kilmarnock and auctioned off. Brainard emphasizes that the story is a blend of fact and fiction. |
