01 00/00 F,L Introduction. Born in Lexington County Va. Chase City - Father was in control of a chain gang. Decided to grow tobacco. Worked at it for two years in NC and decided it was to difficult. Got into door to door sales in Kilmarnock, Va. Did well until depression. Then took a job as a night watchman at the fish factory. Lived on the Gunther farm half way between Kilmarnock and Irvington. Walked to school. Went to Kilmarnock High School. When road was paved they could roller skate to school. After school would walk down to Davis's store near Christ Church and buy food for mother.

02 3/50 L Five grocery stores in Kilmarnock. Sanitary, Nobletts, Norris's . Mr. Macgrovey had grocery store on Irvington Road.

03 5/15 L Fairfax movie theater and Hazel Building movie house. Also had opera house that had guest artist. Also had wrestling. A hotel and dining room.

04 6/11 SW Father could recognize the steamboat whistles. the floating theater came to Irvington - went several times - beautiful red velvet curtains - mostly musicals.

05 7/30 L Gunther farm is where Hills Quarters is. Fresh water pond in back of house - caught first fish there. Funning fishing story

06 8/30 L Remembers that there were a lot of frozen ponds - would play hooky and go skating.

07 9/35 W Got job at the Record Office. Worked for Mr. Curell. Tells funny story about working with Mr. Curell. Did mostly proof reading. Did whatever popped up.

08 14/00 L Talks about Ditechley area - a fish factory on Prentice Creek. Built house in 1952 on what was called Shanty Point - got its name because Arthur's (Jean's husband) father had fishing business and the black people that worked for him lived on the point in "shanties". Ate their meals at the home place. Authers father died when he was 12. Boys (Auther, John, JP) all carried on with the fishing business working very hard.

09 17/36 L Arthur's grandfather bought Mrs. DuPont her first pair of schools.

10 18/19 L Joined Bluff Point Church in 1952. Sign in front of Church is in the memory of Supreme Court Justice Powell's brother who was a member of the church.

11 19/33 L The storm of 33 a chicken house floated across the creek.

12 21/22 L White Stone beach - lots of fun had music, took swimming lessons there - tells story about going there with one boy and came home with another boy-father told her she couldn't go for a month. Had a netted in area to keep sea nettles out.
