Port Royal
On the south shore the old port was
consolidated as a town in 1744 and was one of the major ports
of entry during the colonial period.
During the Civil War it was considered
as a crossing point for Union troops during the early part of
the war. It was here that John Wilkes Booth crossed the river
on his way to his capture just down the road from the town.
Following the Civil War Port Royal
became an important stop on the steamboat run providing a point
for taking on and putting off both passengers and freight.
