Steamboat Disaster

The sinking of the Steamboat Wawaset is probably the worst maritime disaster on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. On August 9, 1873 the vessel caught fire and sank in the Potomac River south of Washington just north of Virginia Beach. To find out more about the Wawaset disaster visit this site.
